I rate Ginger Wasabi Sushi + Grill a 5/5. From the atmosphere to the service, and food, this place never seems to disappoint. My friends and I come here about once a week when we are craving sushi. This homey restaurant, undoubtedly, is better than all the sushi restaurants I've been to back in my hometown. For a not-so-flashy place, it certainly has a lot to offer. The restaurant is a bit on the smaller side, but I love how intimate it is. The employees here were very nice and friendly, and checked up on us consistently. This restaurant stays open super late which is SO NICE, especially if you’re hungry late at night and everything else is closed. Their menu is a lot bigger than you would expect, and I absolutely loved everything I have ordered. I've tried the UK Roll, Spicy California Roll, and the Valentine Roll, which were all to die for, but my top favorite is the Tiger Roll with a side of fried rice; it has been my new current obsession. But if what I’ve already tried is any indication, then I’d bet that the rest of the menu is worth trying. Also, the plating presentation for all of the rolls always looks absolutely unbelievable. Their portion sizes are just right, and the price of this place is extremely affordable, so you definitely get your money's worth. Honestly, I only have good things to say about this restaurant. Every experience I’ve had seems to be better than the last. It is such a reliable restaurant that you can never get sick of it.
Overview
Walking into Ginger Wasabi Sushi Grill at 103 W Maxwell St, Lexington, KY 40508, United States, feels like stepping into a cozy spot where authentic flavors meet modern flair. From the moment you enter, the welcoming ambiance immediately sets the tone for a relaxed dining experience, perfect for casual lunches, family dinners, or a night out with friends. The staff greets you with genuine warmth, ready to guide you through a menu that balances traditional sushi favorites with innovative twists that keep the culinary experience exciting.
One of my first experiences here was trying their signature rolls, which are crafted with care and precision. Each roll bursts with fresh ingredients-from creamy avocado to tender fish sourced from reputable suppliers, ensuring top-notch quality. The spicy tuna roll, for example, showcases a delicate balance of heat and umami, which comes from combining premium tuna with a slightly smoky sauce. It’s clear that the chefs at Ginger Wasabi Sushi Grill apply meticulous techniques learned from years of experience, blending flavors with a professional touch that even seasoned sushi lovers appreciate.
The menu is expansive but thoughtfully organized, featuring everything from sashimi platters to tempura dishes, catering to both adventurous diners and those who prefer classic flavors. I noticed a group nearby enjoying the hibachi section, where skilled chefs cooked right in front of them. Watching the food sizzle on the grill while the chef performs skilled flips and garnishes is not just entertaining but also highlights the commitment to a high-quality dining experience. Studies from the National Restaurant Association show that interactive dining experiences like this significantly enhance customer satisfaction, and Ginger Wasabi delivers on that front.
Beyond sushi, their appetizer selection is equally impressive. The miso soup is rich and warming, made from scratch using traditional techniques, and the edamame is perfectly seasoned-a small detail that demonstrates their dedication to authenticity. In my experience, restaurants that pay attention to these smaller menu items often maintain higher overall quality, which aligns with what culinary experts, including the James Beard Foundation, recommend for building lasting reputations.
Customer reviews consistently highlight the attentive service and the freshness of every dish. A friend of mine, a long-time Lexington resident, praised the nigiri for its delicate cuts and perfectly seasoned rice, noting that it rivals many sushi spots in larger metropolitan areas. This combination of skilled preparation, premium ingredients, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a trusted choice for both locals and visitors exploring the area.
If you’re curious about trying something unique, the chef’s specials often feature seasonal ingredients that reflect both creativity and knowledge of food trends. For instance, a recent special combined seared salmon with a zesty citrus glaze, demonstrating an understanding of how bold flavors can harmonize without overpowering each other. Research from food science journals supports that well-balanced flavor profiles enhance taste perception and overall dining satisfaction, a principle clearly applied here.
The restaurant’s layout and location at 103 W Maxwell St make it convenient to visit, whether you’re walking downtown or stopping by after errands. Parking is manageable, and the cozy dining space encourages lingering over meals while soaking in the friendly energy of the staff and fellow diners. It’s the kind of place where you can return repeatedly, knowing each visit offers consistency and thoughtful preparation.
Whether you’re new to sushi or a longtime enthusiast, Ginger Wasabi Sushi Grill offers a blend of expertise, fresh ingredients, and approachable service. The combination of quality menu items, inviting atmosphere, and professional attention to detail makes it a standout dining experience in Lexington. It’s not just a meal-it’s an experience where culinary passion meets a welcoming environment, leaving guests eager to return for more.

This sushi restaurant was the perfect place for Japanese on a budget. Their bento box was so filling and tasted wonderful! Will definitely be coming back :)
Really delicious at such an affordable price. The decor was so cute, it really put a smile on our faces. It was very clean and well lit. The hostess along with the staff were nice. I got the strawberry mojito which was sweet and refreshing. We appreciate the simpler menu with all the classic rolls and some fun ones. We also really like the sushi fries. It was a bed of sweet potato fries topped with kani salad; the flavors worked really well. I really liked the salmon poke bowl, it was a good sized portion. The prices really surprised us, it was not as expensive as many other places. We over ordered as per usual but we will definitely be back.
The exterior is modest and seemed clean. The inside has a cute aesthetic, and I love all the cats in the murals. The service was good. They didn't hover, or ignore us, and always had a smile. They have a full bar which surprised me. The coconut upside-down drink was super tasty. The strawberry mojito had a lot more mint than I'm used to, but was also good. The sushi fries were good, but too much & rich for one person to finish. I had the wildcat roll and a Philadelphia roll. They tasted fresh. I feel like the portion on the wildcat may be a little small, but it's a specialty roll so the ingredients probably make it that way. My hubby got a teriyaki bowl and it was too much food. There is a slight cooking/fryer smell common in smaller restaurants, so you may leave smelling it on your clothes. Not something they can help, but maybe don't wear something that isn't easy to wash.
We recently discovered Ginger Wasabi, and we've been back multiple times. This place is great for the following things: 1) Open until 1 am most nights. Great for night owls! 2) Great sushi and appetizers! Also love the lo mein which can be bought as a side or a meal. 3) Great staff. Everytime I'm in there, I meet a new server. They have all been unfailingly polite, helpful and fast. 4) Well-lit, music at a good, background level. 5) Very affordable and large rolls. 6) Tempura fried cheesecake. Yuuuum. I always get a Pink Lady roll, and it's pretty unique to the restaurant. It is also PINK! We will be visiting again many, many more times. Check it out!
Ordered a tuna roll and salmon poke bowl to go, and it came out relatively fast. Waited a little less than ten minutes. The food tasted good and was reasonably priced. The negative was that the amount of fish in the roll and bowl was less than I would have expected.
Went with a friend and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere. Super cosy and chill, generally laid-back but nice vibes. The staff were incredibly nice and attentive! I got the valentine roll which had very smooth fresh tuna. Each bite was delicious and the eel sauce went so well with it. We also got the pork dumplings and green tea mochi ice cream - cannot reccomend the mochi enough! The green tea flavor was delicious and refreshing. Overall a really delightful and affordable place.
Love love love incredibly happy with this restaurant the food was so fresh one of my go too places. 1/4/25 ordered sesame chicken to go was very affordable and portions were great. But it was pretty underwhelming plain tasting definitely had better, but I will always recommend this place for it hibachi and sushi options.
